Rupee Rally Slashes Gold Prices by Four Percent
India's rupee has experienced a sharp appreciation against the US dollar, thanks in part to $127 billion in mop-up through Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits. This has led to a fall in gold prices by ₹7,270 per 10 grams or four percent over the last eight trading sessions.
The rupee's appreciation against the dollar means that the value of dollar-denominated gold depreciates, making it cheaper for consumers in rupee terms. However, this also leads to reduced demand as consumers wait for prices to settle before making purchases.
Industry experts expect a mild dip in gold volume per purchase if volatility persists, but overall footfall is likely to hold up reasonably well. The fall in gold prices may help boost demand during the upcoming festive season, with responsible consumption and value creation being encouraged by the industry.
