Russia Attacks Key Grain Export Port as Ukraine Seeks More Air Defense Missiles

Russia's military has attacked Ukraine's largest grain export port on the Danube River, causing damage and starting a fire. The port of Izmail, located near the Romanian border in southern Ukraine's Odesa region, is critical for exporting grain and other commodities.

The attack occurred overnight, with authorities reporting that it damaged port infrastructure and took out power in parts of the city.

Romania, a NATO and EU member, scrambled two fighter jets after an 'aerial target' spent about two minutes in Romanian airspace before entering Ukraine, where explosions were heard.

The assault on Izmail comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged the US to send more Patriot air defense missiles to help his country navigate winter. He said that a 5% share of the current US stockpile would allow Ukraine to 'go through the winter and save people's lives', while a 10% share could 'destroy all the Russians' ballistic missiles'.

Ukraine relies heavily on grain exports, with around 90% of its crops shipped via the Black Sea. The Russian naval blockade has already led to a 76% year-on-year decline in grain exports in August.
