Russia Becomes Belgium's Sole LNG Supplier Amid Iran War Disruption

Russia has become Belgium's sole supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) after the Iran war disrupted Middle Eastern imports, according to Bloomberg.

This shift exposes a contradiction in EU energy policy, which aims to reduce Russian purchases before a full ban takes effect in January 2027. However, disruption around the Strait of Hormuz has reopened demand for Moscow's fuel.

In July, Belgium bought about 0.4 million tons of Russian LNG, with its total LNG intake falling by more than 40% from a year earlier due to high prices discouraging winter stockpiling. Russia became the sole supplier in a shrinking market.
