Russia Bombs Danube Grain Port Amid Record-Low Water Levels

Russian forces have launched airstrikes on Ukraine's Danube grain port in the Izmail district of the Odesa region, damaging a civilian vessel and injuring four people. The attack comes just days after a similar strike on August 13.

The port is crucial for Ukraine's export revenue, particularly during its peak wheat harvest season, with around 60 million metric tons expected to be harvested this year. However, Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi warns that global food prices could increase by 25% to 30% if the issue is not resolved.

The Danube River itself is experiencing record-low water levels due to heatwaves and droughts in Europe over the summer, making it difficult for ships to navigate. As a result, Ukraine is exploring alternative routes, including a proposed rail corridor through Moldova to Constanța on Romania's Black Sea coast.

NATO member Romania has scrambled fighter jets several times this week to respond to Russian bombardments of Izmail, and the country also shot down a drone suspected of being Russian that entered its airspace from Moldova.
