Russia Deploys Domestically-Built Ice-Class Carrier Along Northern Sea Route
Russia has marked another step towards reducing its dependence on Western markets for liquefied natural gas (LNG) by deploying a domestically-built ice-class carrier. The Konstantin Posiet, Russia's second new tanker built at the Zvezda shipyard in Primorsky Krai, set sail along the Northern Sea Route to transport LNG from the Arctic LNG 2 plant.
The vessel was constructed to serve the Arctic LNG 2 project, which is subject to U.S. sanctions. This move signifies Russia's continued efforts to find alternative routes for its gas exports despite Western restrictions.
Zvezda shipyard specializes in building Arc7 ice-class tankers capable of breaking through ice up to two meters thick. The first Russian-built ice-class tanker from the yard, Alexey Kosygin, entered service last December, marking a significant milestone in Russia's efforts to develop its Arctic LNG capabilities.
