Russia Floats Railway Link to Indian Ocean Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions

Russia is exploring an alternative route to access the Indian Ocean and potentially connect with India through a railway link, according to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

This proposal comes as Moscow seeks to reduce its reliance on existing maritime routes, particularly the Bosphorus and Strait of Hormuz, which have been disrupted due to ongoing conflicts in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz has seen a significant decline in trade flow since February 28, with natural gas exports plummeting by 95% in April compared to the same month last year. The disruption has highlighted the vulnerability of global trade to dependence on a single maritime chokepoint.
