Russia Grapples with Grain Export Crisis After Drone Strikes

The Russian government is taking steps to mitigate the impact of disruptions on grain exports after drone strikes damaged key infrastructure at Novorossiysk port. The Agriculture Ministry, led by Oksana Lut, is considering purchasing grain to offset losses and supporting local farmers through loan extensions and sales subsidies.

Agricultural exports from Russia are facing major challenges due to the damage caused by drone strikes. According to analysts at SovEcon, Russian wheat exports may fall to 1.8-2.2 million metric tons in August, down from 4.5 million metric tons a year earlier.

The ministry is exploring alternative routes for agricultural exports, including using ports on the Baltic Sea, Caspian Sea, and in the Far East. However, these longer routes increase logistics costs and cannot fully replace the lost deep-water capacity in southern Russia.
