Russia Seeks Far East Route Amid Black Sea Grain Export Disruptions
Russia is turning to its Far East as an alternative route for exporting grain, following disruptions in its key Black Sea ports due to Ukrainian strikes. Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut said that since July, major wheat suppliers Russia and Ukraine have attacked each other's ports, terminals, and shipping infrastructure in the Black Sea.
The disruption has sharply reduced exports of key commodities ranging from oil to grain, with the Black Sea basin accounting for more than 70% of Russia's grain exports. This happened at the peak of the summer crop-export season, exacerbating the issue.
Lut mentioned that the Far East is being considered as one of the alternative ways to export grain, but it remains unclear how effective this route will be in replacing the lost capacity from the Black Sea ports.
