Russia Ships First Crude from Vostok Oil Project Through Arctic
Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin announced that Russia has shipped its first crude oil from the Vostok Oil project through the Arctic. The shipment was loaded onto the high-ice-class tanker Valentin Pikul at the newly built Sever Bay terminal in Taimyr region.
The Vostok Oil project is expected to supply 30 million metric tons of crude to the global market in the second half of next year, with a target of reaching 50 million tons by 2030. This would be about 1 million barrels per day, or around 10% of Russia's current oil production.
Russia has promoted the Northern Sea Route as a shorter shipping link between Europe and Asia, but it has faced several problems including Western sanctions against Russia, harsh weather and ice conditions, and a shortage of high-ice-class vessels. The route is being tested by South Korea with its first container ship trial voyage.
The Vostok Oil project includes producing fields from the Vankor group and undeveloped fields in the Payakha cluster. Rosneft had been looking for other international partners, but none were announced at the ceremony.
