Russia Strikes Black Sea Vessels, Threatening Global Grain Supplies
Russia's military has escalated its maritime conflict with Ukraine by striking five vessels in the Black Sea, including three cargo ships and a tanker at the Pivdennyi port. The strike also targeted fuel storage facilities in Chornomorsk, which is nearby.
The targets were part of a larger campaign to disrupt Ukrainian exports, particularly grain shipments. Ukraine has been one of the world's leading exporters of wheat, corn, barley, and sunflower oil, with most of these exports moving through Odesa, Pivdennyi, and Chornomorsk.
The collapse of the Black Sea Grain Initiative in 2023 led to a surge in commodity prices. Ukraine has since established alternative shipping corridors along the western Black Sea coastline, but these routes rely on the continued functionality of the affected ports.
