Russia Strikes Ukrainian Grain Export Port Amid Growing Food Crisis

Russia's military has struck Ukraine's largest grain export port on the Danube River, damaging infrastructure and sparking concerns about global food supplies. The attack occurred at the Izmail port in Ukraine's southern region of Odesa, which handles significant exports of grain and other commodities.

The Ukrainian government warned that record-low water levels on the Danube could further complicate efforts to ship grain to Europe. Russia's naval blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea ports has already led to a 76% drop in grain exports year-over-year so far in August, with Ukraine accounting for around 6% of global wheat and 11% of corn supplies.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has urged the US to provide more air defense missiles, specifically Patriot interceptors, to help protect against Russian ballistic missile attacks. The US currently has a stockpile of Patriots, with Ukraine seeking at least 5% of that total to get through winter.
