Russia-Ukraine Conflict Escalates as Both Sides Launch Attacks on Grain Ports and Oil Refineries
Russia and Ukraine exchanged blows as both countries launched attacks on each other's grain export ports and oil refineries. The attacks follow discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and then with Zelenskyy to discuss a peace plan.
Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had targeted an oil refinery in Russia's Ryazan region, which is approximately 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The attack also hit oil processing facilities in Russia's Perm region and the Republic of Tatarstan, as well as a drone launch facility in the Kursk region.
Russia responded by attacking Ukraine's grain export ports, including Izmail along the Danube River and Chornomorsk on the Black Sea. Ukraine's weekly exports of wheat, corn, and barley from August 27 to September 2 totaled 433,000 tons, an 80% increase compared to the previous week but still far short of usual export levels.
