Russia-Ukraine Conflict Threatens Global Wheat Supplies

The escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine has raised concerns about global wheat supplies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently released a conservative forecast for future wheat exports from both countries. According to the USDA's World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, Russian wheat exports are expected to reach 46 million tonnes in the 2026-27 period, down by 1.5 million metric tonnes from previous projections. Ukraine's wheat export forecast is also down, at 13.5 million tonnes, a reduction of 1 million tonnes.

Rhett Montgomery, a market analyst with DTN-the Progressive Farmer, believes the USDA's forecast may be too conservative. He notes that the wheat market has been volatile in recent weeks and that a bullish event could trigger a price rally. However, there is also the possibility of a ceasefire or even an end to the four-year conflict, which could lead to a buildup of stocks within Russia and Ukraine.

Montgomery warns that if Russian and Ukrainian wheat exports are significantly reduced, the European Union may struggle to fill the gap. He points out that EU production has been impacted by a late-season drought, and domestic usage for wheat is higher than usual. The USDA also sees world importers cutting demand in response to high prices.

The conflict's impact on global wheat supplies could have far-reaching consequences. Wheat export commitments from the United States are down 30% compared to the same time last year, suggesting that other countries may be hesitant to source wheat from the Black Sea region due to the war zone risks and high costs.
