Russia-Ukraine De-Escalation Sends Grain Futures Reeling
Russia and Ukraine's decision to de-escalate their yearslong war has led to lower wheat and corn futures prices in overnight trading.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the de-escalation could lead to peace between the countries, but noted that Ukraine is willing to halt strikes on Russian territory only if Russia agrees to refrain from striking Ukrainian infrastructure.
The war has had a significant impact on global grain exports, with Russia being the world's largest exporter of wheat and Ukraine being the sixth-biggest shipper of grain.
In other market news, corn futures for December delivery fell 3.25 cents to $5.30 a bushel due to improved conditions in the US crop, which saw 57% of it rated as good or excellent, up from 56% a week earlier.
