Russia Weighs Arming Grain Ships Amid Black Sea Drone Threats

Russia is weighing the option of arming grain ships to counter drone threats in the Black Sea, a move that could have significant implications for global food supplies. Approximately one-fourth of Russia's grain exports pass through the Sea of Azov under normal conditions, but trade has come to a complete standstill due to recent attacks.

The proposal to equip commercial vessels with small arms and portable anti-aircraft systems is being discussed between representatives from the defense and transport ministries, as well as grain companies and shipping lines. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said 'Russia's navy can protect commercial ships,' adding that President Vladimir Putin views attacks on merchant vessels as piracy.

The strikes are not one-sided, with Ukraine also halting its own grain shipments from Odesa last week after Russian attacks. Both sides have been hitting each other's commercial ships and port infrastructure in the Black Sea for the past two weeks.
