Russian Blockade Threatens Ukraine's Economy with $40 Billion in Export Revenue
Ukraine's economy is on high alert as a prolonged blockade threatens $40 billion in export revenue. The country's ability to ship agricultural products, iron ore, and metals has been severely impacted by Russian missile strikes targeting Black Sea port infrastructure.
The exports that have been choked down include grain, which accounts for 60% of Ukraine's total export volume and represents around $25 billion in annual potential revenue. Iron ore exports worth approximately $2.5 billion annually also rely heavily on port access, with up to 90% of shipments depending on it.
The loss of this capacity has significant global ripple effects. President Zelenskyy has warned about potential food security risks stemming from the blockade, as Ukraine is one of the world's top exporters of wheat, corn, barley, and sunflower oil.
