Russian Grain Flood Threatens Kazakh Farmers' Livelihoods

Kazakhstani farmers are facing a potential crisis as cheap Russian grain threatens their key markets. According to Evgeny Karabanov, head of the analytical committee of the Kazakhstan Grain Union, Kazakhstan has traditionally been a major buyer of Kazakhstani wheat and flour.

Russia has large grain reserves that it cannot export to its traditional foreign markets due to low prices. As a result, Russian suppliers are seeking alternative markets in Central Asia, including Kazakhstan and other countries in the region.

The price difference between Russian and Kazakhstani grain is huge, with one ton of fourth-grade wheat costing around 6,000 rubles (31,500 tenge or $68) in Russia compared to 85,000-90,000 tenge ($184-$195) in Kazakhstan.

Karabanov believes the main danger for Kazakhstani farmers is not the direct import of Russian grain into Kazakhstan but increased competition in foreign markets. If traditional consumers focus on cheaper Russian grain, there will be no demand for Kazakhstani grain, leaving farmers to either lower their prices or face difficulties selling their harvest.
