Russian LNG Storage Vessel Makes Unusual Voyage Along Norway's Coast
A Russian LNG storage vessel has started an unusual northbound voyage along Norway's coast after being escorted through the Baltic by one of Russia's most advanced frigates.
The Portovyy, a 277-meter floating storage unit, left its usual position near Vysotsk on the Gulf of Finland and is sailing towards Murmansk, according to AIS tracking data. It was accompanied for part of its journey through the Baltic Sea by the Russian Navy frigate Admiral Kasatonov.
The move is significant because Portovyy has not previously left the Portovaya facility since the LNG plant began operating in 2022. The Admiral Kasatonov, commissioned in 2020, is one of Russia's most modern surface vessels and is equipped with the Tsirkon hypersonic missile system.
The relocation of Portovyy comes as Russia faces the loss of its traditional European LNG market due to EU legislation phasing out Russian gas imports. The move could give Russia additional floating storage capacity at a strategically important Arctic gateway and make it easier to consolidate, store or transfer LNG cargoes destined for non-European markets.
