Russian Oil Production Surges Above 9 Million BPD Amid Ongoing Challenges

Russia's oil production has surpassed 9 million barrels per day (bpd) in July, according to two industry sources who spoke to Reuters. This marks a rise of roughly 100,000 bpd from June, despite ongoing sanctions and attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.

Oil and fuel sales remain crucial to Russia's budget, providing a strong incentive for producers to maintain high levels of production. The increase in exports and recovering refinery runs have given Russian producers more flexibility to produce additional barrels.

However, August may bring new challenges. Ukrainian drone attacks intensified in late July and early August, forcing several refineries to suspend operations. A fire broke out at a refinery in Russia's Yaroslavl region on Thursday following another drone strike.

Russia plans to increase crude exports from its western ports by 4% in August, but this will require finding additional ships and loading capacity. With available tanker supply in the Black Sea already tight, further disruptions could overwhelm export routes.
