Russian Port Blockade Slams Ukraine's Agricultural Exports
Russian attacks on Ukraine's ports have severely disrupted the country's agricultural export market. As a result, the movement of vessels to the Greater Odesa ports has effectively been halted, forcing Ukraine to rely heavily on railway, road, and Danube routes for exporting products.
This situation is particularly challenging as it coincides with the harvest season, leaving farmers struggling to store already harvested products while also finding funds to prepare for the new planting season. Due to the suspension of maritime export logistics, domestic prices for grains and oilseeds have dropped by approximately 30%.
The direct losses in the agricultural sector this year could reach between $1.5 billion to $3 billion, according to Ukraine's Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky. The minister emphasized that alternative logistics are limited in capacity, covering only about half of the Black Sea ports' capacities before the war.
