Russian Strikes on Odesa Ports Devastate Ukrainian Grain Exports
Russian strikes on Ukraine's Odesa ports have severely impacted grain exports, threatening the livelihoods of farmers and global food security. According to Bloomberg, weekly grain and oilseed exports have plummeted by over 90% since early July, with nearly all of Ukraine's grain exports passing through these ports.
Farmers like Ravil Dzhamally are struggling to store unsold harvests or sell them locally at significantly lower prices. With financial reserves depleted from the previous blockade, this year's crisis is worse than the 2022 disruption, said farmers.
Ukraine's Agriculture Ministry has requested a €220 million EU grant to subsidize interest and unlock up to €4 billion in loans, while exploring alternative rail routes through Moldova. However, these options are costly and have limited capacity, raising concerns about the sector's long-term viability.
