Russia's Black Sea Assault Threatens Global Food Security
Russia's military campaign against Ukraine has intensified in recent days, targeting the country's Black Sea ports and disrupting maritime traffic.
The attacks have caused significant damage to port facilities, civilian vessels, and warehouses, resulting in several fatalities. On July 13, a cargo vessel flying the Togolese flag was struck by Russian forces while unloading mineral fertilizers, killing three crew members. The following day, a drone strike damaged a civilian vessel registered under the Marshall Islands flag, leading to two more deaths.
The conflict has halted sea traffic in the Black Sea, which accounts for 90% of Ukraine's wheat, corn, and sunflower seed exports. This disruption threatens global food security, as many countries rely on Ukrainian grain imports. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha emphasized the need for a coordinated effort to restore freedom of navigation and expressed gratitude to the European Union for reinstating the 'Corridors of Solidarity'.
