Russia's Black Sea Blockade Threatens Ukrainian Farmers' Livelihoods
Ukrainian farmers are struggling as Russia's campaign of attacks on Black Sea ports has almost halted agricultural exports from Ukraine. Serhiy Rybalko, a 57-year-old farmer, lost two-thirds of his land when Russia occupied southern Ukraine in 2022 and is now facing financial ruin due to the blockade.
Rybalko's grain storage is nearly full, and he needs to make $447,074 per month during the harvest campaign to service loans, pay wages, and buy fuel. Without exports, farmers like Rybalko are unable to raise enough money for the next harvesting cycle.
The Ukrainian government has introduced an emergency aid package for farmers, but it may not be enough to alleviate the crisis. The country's agricultural sector has already suffered $90 billion in losses since 2022, and arable land under cultivation has shrunk by nearly a quarter due to active combat, heavy mining, and shelling.
