Russia's Blockade Halves Ukraine's Grain Export Projections
Ukraine's agricultural exports are expected to plummet by over half this season due to Russian attacks on Black Sea ports. According to Ukraine's Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, the country could export around 29.6 million tons of agricultural products in the 2026-27 marketing year, a 54% decrease from the previous estimate of 64.4 million tons.
The Russian attacks have disrupted operations at the Port of Odesa, which normally handles around 90% of grain shipments. Alternative routes along the Danube are limited by drought, causing water levels in the river to fall to record lows.
Ukraine is one of the world's largest grain suppliers, and its agricultural sector generated more than half of the country's export revenue last year. Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports have already caused direct losses exceeding $2 billion for the second half of 2026.
