Russia's Blockade Threatens Ukrainian Harvest and Global Food Security
Ukraine's farmers are facing another crisis as Russia's blockade of the Black Sea ports threatens to ruin their harvest. Serhiy Rybalko, a Ukrainian farmer, has lost two-thirds of his land since Russia occupied southern Ukraine in 2022.
Rybalko's grain storage is nearly full and he needs to export his wheat, but with the blockade, there are no buyers left. He previously sold to major exporter Nibulon and local processing plants, but now they're not buying due to the lack of exports.
The blockade has had a devastating impact on Ukraine's economy, which relies heavily on agricultural exports for revenue. Farming accounts for nearly 60% of Ukraine's export revenues, and the blockade is putting pressure on the fragile wartime economy.
Denys Marchuk, deputy head of Ukraine's main farmers' union UAC, warned of famine in some import-dependent countries across Africa and the Middle East if Ukrainian grain exports don't arrive on time. He also stated that without exports, farmers can't raise enough money for next year's harvesting cycle.
