Russia's Blockade Traps Ukrainian Grain Harvest, Threatening Global Food Supplies

Ukraine's farmers are facing a crisis due to Russia's blockade of Black Sea ports, which has halted agricultural exports from Ukraine. The country is one of the world's largest producers of wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds, with around 90% of its exports going through the Black Sea.

Farmer Serhiy Rybalko lost two-thirds of his land when Russia occupied southern Ukraine in 2022. Now, his farm is struggling to export grain due to the blockade, which has thrown this year's potentially good harvest into jeopardy.

'This is a complete disaster for farmers,' said Rybalko. Without exports, he cannot raise enough money for next year's harvesting cycle.

Ukraine expects a 60-million-ton grain harvest this year, but the shortage of storage capacity could reach 11 million tons. The government has introduced an emergency aid package for farmers, but they need more help to secure their crops.
