Russia's Military Operation in Ukraine Hits Tipping Point

Over 1,600 days into Russia's military operation in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin's situation continues to deteriorate. More than 450,000 Russian troops have been killed since February 24, 2022, with another 1 million wounded or missing. The monthly casualty rate has reached a critical point, where more Russians are dying (over 30,000) than can be replaced through recruitment (around 27,000). This is further exacerbated by Ukraine's development of its drone capabilities, which has led to significant damage to Russia's oil and gas infrastructure.

The EU has announced plans to freeze the oil price cap at $44.10 per barrel for at least another year, affecting Russian seaborne crude oil and petroleum products exported to third countries outside the EU. This will not only impact China and India but also other major buyers like Turkey, Brazil, and Azerbaijan. The US is also planning to impose massive tariffs on imported goods from these countries if they continue to buy Russian oil or gas.

Former Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov warned that increased oil sanctions could tip Russia's economy into crisis. With its 'free resources' exhausted and a projected economic stall, the country is facing severe stagflation, a collapsing sovereign safety net, and a systemic domestic fuel crisis. The Central Bank of Russia has slashed its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 0-1%, with official data revealing the economy contracted by 0.2% in the first part of the year.
