Russia's Port Blockade Devastates Ukraine's Grain Exports
Ukraine's grain exports have plummeted by 75% in the first two weeks of August, according to UkrAgroConsult, due to Russian attacks on port infrastructure and civilian shipping. This has severely impacted Ukrainian farmers at the height of the harvest season.
The decline in exports is coupled with a shortage of buyers, full storage facilities, and a lack of working capital for farmers. Market participants estimate that wheat exports may remain one of the few profitable options for producers under current conditions.
Ukraine expects to harvest around 60 million tons of grain this year, with the wheat harvest already at its peak and the main corn harvest due to begin soon. The agricultural sector could lose $2-4 billion over the next 6-12 months due to restrictions on maritime exports, while up to 60% of grain farms risk becoming unprofitable.
