Russia's Port Strikes Threaten Ukraine's Agricultural Sector with $1.5-3 Billion Loss
Ukraine's agricultural sector is facing significant economic losses due to Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports. According to Taras Vysotsky, the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, these attacks could result in losses ranging from $1.5 billion to $3 billion. This is because maritime ports account for approximately 90% of grain and oilseed exports.
The minister emphasized that no alternative route can completely replace maritime ports, and even the most optimistic scenario would require an additional 50-70 euros per ton in costs. Vysotsky noted that the current blockade has already restricted export possibilities, making it crucial for international partners to provide support to Ukraine's agricultural sector.
Despite these challenges, grain and legume exports have seen a slight increase in the first month of the 2026/27 marketing year, reaching 2.6 million tons, a 55% increase from the same period last year. Wheat exports in July also rose by 42%, while corn exports doubled.
