Russia's Rejection of Moratorium Sends Wheat Prices Soaring
Russia's stance on Ukraine has sparked concerns about prolonged disruptions to grain shipments in the Black Sea, causing wheat prices to surge. On Tuesday, futures in Chicago rose by as much as 3.9%, the largest increase since August 26, after markets reopened following the Labor Day holiday.
The price jump comes despite weekend talks between US envoys and President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine, which ended without concrete signs of progress. Russia had rejected a proposed moratorium on attacks against ships carrying civilian goods in the Black Sea.
This move has heightened concerns about disruptions to grain shipments in the vital trade corridor. As a result, wheat prices have seen their largest increase since August 26.
