Russia's Strikes on Odesa Threaten Ukraine's Grain Exports by More Than Half
Ukraine's agricultural shipments are facing significant disruption following Russian attacks on Odesa. The country's biggest source of export revenue, its grain exports could plummet by more than half this season. According to Ukraine's Agriculture Ministry, via Bloomberg Terminal, the estimated tonnage of agricultural products for the 2026-27 marketing year has dropped to 29.6 million tons, a 54% decline from an earlier estimate of 64.4 million tons.
The sharp drop in exports is attributed to the Russian strikes on Black Sea ports, which have severely impacted Ukraine's ability to transport grain to international markets. Wheat exports are also expected to take a significant hit, with a predicted decline of 53% from a previous forecast of 15.7 million tons.
The economic implications of this decline in exports are substantial for Ukraine, as agriculture remains its biggest source of revenue. The country's agricultural sector is crucial not only for its economy but also for global food security.
