Russia's War on Ukrainian Trade Sparks Global Food Security Crisis
Russia's war on Ukraine is having far-reaching consequences for global food security. By targeting ports, shipping lanes, and agricultural infrastructure, Russia is essentially weaponizing hunger against millions in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Ukraine was once a major contributor to the world's food supply, providing 15% of global corn exports, 10% of wheat, 15-20% of barley, and 50% of sunflower oil. However, since Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine's grain exports have been halved compared to last year, driving up global food prices.
The situation is dire, with over 9 million tonnes of grain at risk of rotting in storage by October due to lack of funds for next year's crops. If this harvest is lost, the ripple effects will be felt well into 2027.
