Saipem and COOEC Secure $5B North Field Compression Contract in Qatar
The North Field Compression project in Qatar has entered its construction phase after QatarEnergy LNG awarded a $5 billion contract to Saipem and COOEC. The COMP5 offshore engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contract will support the country's long-term LNG expansion strategy by sustaining production from the world's largest non-associated natural gas reservoir.
The project involves the construction of two massive offshore compression complexes, each weighing approximately 68,000 tonnes. The facilities will include one offshore compression platform, one living quarters platform, and one flare platform, as well as interconnecting bridges and associated systems.
Construction activities are expected to span five years, with offshore installation scheduled for 2029 and 2030 using Saipem's heavy-lift construction vessel De He. The project marks a significant milestone in Qatar's North Field Production Sustainability program, which aims to maintain reservoir pressure as the giant offshore field matures.
