Samsung and Kongsberg Join Forces on Autonomous LNG Carrier
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Kongsberg Maritime have joined forces to develop an autonomous liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. The ship will have a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, making it one of the largest vessels of its kind.
The project aims to improve safety and efficiency in ship operations by leveraging autonomous, remote, and low-emission technology. Kongsberg Maritime will be responsible for developing the integrated systems on board the vessel, while SHI will take on the role of global development lead.
SHI has a history of innovation in the field of autonomous navigation. In 2022, they successfully completed a pilot project with their SAS (Samsung Autonomous Ship) technology, which allowed a 9,200-ton vessel to operate autonomously for 512 nautical miles along the South Korean coast.
