Santos's GLNG Project Under Fire as Gas Industry Faces Reputational Crisis

The Australian gas industry has been plagued by controversy in recent years, particularly on the east coast. Former Woodside CEO Peter Coleman spoke out against the industry's reputation for unreliability and unaffordability as early as 2017.

He warned that gas risked being seen as an unreliable source of energy, despite Australia being one of the world's biggest exporters of the fuel.

Coleman's comments proved prophetic, as the past decade has been marked by a deepening reputational crisis for the industry. Soaring domestic gas prices have fueled a backlash against the industry and put pressure on manufacturers and electricity consumers.

The federal government has proposed a national reservation scheme to allocate 20% of annual production to the local market.
