Saudi Airstrikes Target Iranian-Backed Militias in Iraq Amid Escalating Tensions
Saudi Arabia launched targeted strikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq on Wednesday, in response to recent drone attacks on its oil facilities. The operation was carried out in coordination with the US Central Command and marks a significant escalation in tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran-aligned groups operating from Iraqi territory.
The strikes followed the interception and destruction of multiple drones that had targeted oil facilities in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and the capital region of Riyadh, according to the Saudi Ministry of Defense. The ministry stated that those attacks were launched from Iraq by 'terrorist militias loyal to Iran.'
Saudi officials emphasized that the action was limited and aimed at deterrence rather than broader conflict. Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, the official spokesman for the Saudi Ministry of Defence, said in a statement, 'The Kingdom confirms that it does not seek escalation, but it will respond to any aggression it is subjected to.'
The operation reflects ongoing security partnerships between Saudi Arabia and the US. However, analysts noted that persistent attacks from proxy forces continue to test the fragile balance between the two countries.
