Saudi Arabia Blames Iran for Attack on Tanker in Strait of Hormuz
Saudi Arabia accused Iran of attacking an oil tanker owned by its national shipping company, Bahri, in the Strait of Hormuz. The attack killed two Filipino seafarers on board.
The Sidr supertanker was one of two vessels carrying Saudi oil that were hit late on Monday while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is a critical passage for global energy exports from Gulf countries, with about one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas trade passing through it.
Tehran has threatened tankers attempting to sail through the strait without authorization, disrupting energy supplies from neighboring oil-rich nations. The Saudi foreign ministry stressed the need for halting escalations and respecting international maritime safety and global energy security.
