Saudi Arabia Intercepts Drones Launched from Iraq Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense announced that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed several drones launched from Iraqi territory on July 27, 2026. The unmanned aircraft attempted to target oil facilities in the Eastern Province and the Riyadh region.
The incident has been described as 'terrorist operations' carried out by Iran-backed militias. Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki said that these attacks are an attempt to target Saudi Arabia's resources, stressing the Kingdom's inherent right to defend itself while reserving the right to respond at the appropriate time and place.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a separate statement condemning the assaults 'in the strongest terms,' denouncing the use of Iraqi soil by militias affiliated with Iran to launch drone strikes. The statement reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's determination to safeguard its sovereignty and deter aggressors, urging the Iraqi government to take decisive measures to prevent its territory from being used as a staging ground for attacks.
