Saudi Arabia Intercepts Drones Targeting Oil Facilities from Iraq
Saudi Arabia's defense ministry announced on Monday that it had intercepted and destroyed several drones launched from Iraqi territory, targeting oil facilities in the kingdom. The attempted attacks originated from Iraq and were carried out by 'Iran-backed terrorist militias', according to the ministry.
The drones were shot down before they could reach petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province and the Riyadh region. Saudi Arabia has reserved its 'legitimate right' to defend itself and respond at the appropriate time, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry.
The Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks and called on the Iraqi government to ensure that its territory is not used as a launching point for attacks. The incident comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, following recent military exchanges between the US and Iran.
