Saudi Arabia Joins US-Iran Conflict Amid Global Shipping Threat
The escalating conflict between the US and Iran has taken a new turn as Saudi Arabia becomes militarily involved, following coordinated airstrikes with U.S. Central Command on July 29.
Saudi Arabia cited its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, targeting Iranian-backed proxies operating from Iraqi territory after intercepting several UAVs attempting to target oil facilities in Eastern and Riyadh regions.
The Kingdom reiterated that it does not seek escalation but will respond decisively to any aggression directed against it. The US has canceled a planned attack on Iran following talks with Saudi Arabia, but Tehran still hasn't confirmed negotiations.
In response to the escalating tensions, Saudi Arabia formed a multinational Red Sea Defence Alliance, seeking support from over 50 countries and organizations. Thirteen countries have already signed on, including Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Nigeria, Jordan, Bangladesh, Yemen, Djibouti, and Somalia.
