Saudi Arabia has established a multinational maritime defense alliance aimed at protecting shipping lanes in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. The initiative was announced after a high-level meeting in Riyadh hosted by the Saudi Defense Ministry, attended by military chiefs and representatives from 43 countries, including an EU delegation.

The alliance is a defensive framework aimed at enhancing maritime security, safeguarding freedom of navigation, securing international trade routes, and energy supply lines. Participation in operational activities remains a sovereign decision for each member state, according to the declaration issued by 14 countries, which includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia.

Analysts point out that the establishment of the alliance signals a shift in regional strategic thinking, as Middle Eastern countries adapt to an increasingly interconnected security environment. The launch comes amid growing maritime threats, particularly for Saudi Arabia, which has faced repeated Houthi attacks against commercial shipping and claims responsibility for attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.

While the alliance is seen as a step towards strengthening regional maritime cooperation, analysts caution that it cannot deliver lasting stability without addressing underlying political disputes driving conflict. Sustainable maritime security should be built through cooperation among countries bordering the waterway, rather than excessive internationalization of Red Sea security.
