Saudi Arabia Prepares for Coordinated Attacks by Iraqi Militias and Houthi Forces
Saudi Arabia is bracing for potential attacks on its ports and airports by Iraqi militias working in coordination with Iran-backed Houthis, according to a Saudi official.
The official cited 'multiple intelligence reports' from Saudi Arabia, the US, and regional countries indicating that some Iraqi militia members are planning to attack the Gulf nation 'in the very near future' under the guidance of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The Houthis claimed responsibility for an attack on a Saudi oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden just a day before, and in recent weeks, Saudi Arabia has faced missile attacks from the Houthis in Yemen and drone attacks from Iran-backed militias in Iraq.
Saudi Arabia is pursuing de-escalation efforts and negotiations involving Iran, which appear to be heading in the right direction, according to the official. However, the planned attacks are intended to derail progress in these negotiations and might indicate a power struggle within Iran itself, the official suggested.
