Saudi Arabia Readies Major Military Offensive Against Houthi Rebels in Yemen
Saudi Arabia is reportedly preparing for a major military offensive against the Houthi rebels in central Yemen, according to Yemeni sources. The move aims to break the chokehold on Saudi oil exports through the southern Red Sea.
Riyadh has been withdrawing its forces from the east of Yemen, which could be preparation for a land-based attack. At the same time, the kingdom is trying to organize a naval coalition to protect shipping from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab strait.
The Saudi Defence Ministry announced that 14 states have issued a joint statement supporting a multinational maritime defence coalition. These countries include Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, and Djibouti.
