Saudi Arabia Redirects Oil Exports Amid Red Sea Risks

Saudi Arabia's oil exports to Asia are facing growing pressures due to security risks and rising shipping and insurance costs. To mitigate this, Aramco has begun offering oil shipments under a ship-to-ship transfer mechanism.

This involves loading oil onto smaller tankers from locations off the Omani coast, which are then transferred to larger tankers near the same location. This partial redirection of Saudi exports aims to bypass navigation disruptions in the Red Sea.

The resort to ship-to-ship transfers comes after Saudi Arabia increased its reliance on Yanbu port in the Red Sea to reduce its dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. However, the escalating risks in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandeb following the Yemeni naval blockade decision have pushed Saudi Arabia to seek alternative routes.

In a related development, Asian refineries are pressuring Aramco to change the loading ports for their oil shipments due to the difficulty of finding tankers willing to sail through the Red Sea. At least two Asian refineries have requested to receive Saudi oil shipments from the Egyptian port of Sidi Kerir on the Mediterranean Sea instead of Yanbu port.
