Saudi Arabia Takes Top Oil Producer Spot from US
Saudi Arabia has taken over as the world's largest oil producer, surpassing the US, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The country's elevated oil production allowed it to overtake the US and become the top producer. This shift comes after Saudi Arabia added 400,000 barrels a day of output from low-cost fields since May.
The drop in US production was largely driven by a decline in shale oil production, which saw investments slump by 66 percent since 2014. However, analysts at Rystad Energy predict that shale oil could recover due to its competitive break-even price of $50 a barrel.
The IEA's monthly report on Tuesday stated that US output in August stood at 12.2 million barrels a day, while Saudi Arabian production reached 12.58 million barrels a day the same month. This marks a significant shift in global oil production dynamics.
