Saudi Arabia Tries Diplomacy to Contain Houthi Conflict
Saudi Arabia is attempting to prevent further escalation of its conflict with Houthi militants through diplomatic channels. The kingdom has held talks with the Yemen-based group via Omani mediators, aiming to contain the renewed conflict and protect its oil industry and economy.
The Houthis are pressing for more economic concessions from Riyadh, including payments for some Yemeni civil servants and the lifting of restrictions on goods and people entering Houthi-run areas. Saudi Arabia has held intermittent Oman-mediated talks with the group since a 2022 ceasefire.
Riyadh conducted limited airstrikes on Houthi positions in late July but appears to have paused its military actions as it seeks a diplomatic resolution. The kingdom is still preparing for military options if diplomacy fails, according to people familiar with the matter.
