Saudi Arabia's Oil Exports Under Siege Amid Houthi Blockade
The ongoing conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran has led to increased tensions in the global oil market. On July 20, 2026, Houthi armed forces announced a maritime blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, which had become a vital export route for the kingdom's oil. The move comes at a time when the war between Washington and Tehran is already disrupting oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Houthi blockade has led to a surge in 'dark' voyages, where ships switch off their AIS transponders while transiting the risk zone. This practice complicates the task of observers trying to track the vessels, making it difficult to assess the reliability of Saudi oil export statistics.
According to George Morris, an analyst at Vortexa, the gap in export estimates reflects the objective difficulty of measuring a phenomenon deliberately rendered invisible. In response to the growing opacity, Saudi Arabia has redirected a growing share of its crude northward, toward the Suez Canal and the SUMED pipeline.
