Saudi Aramco Shifts Oil Shipments Around Strait of Hormuz Tensions
Saudi Aramco has offered additional crude oil cargoes to Asian buyers through routes outside the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters. This is the second consecutive week that the Saudi oil giant has made such an offer. The latest move involves Arab Medium and Arab Heavy crude, which are available for shipment through ship-to-ship transfers off Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates or Sohar in Oman.
The decision highlights efforts by Saudi Arabia and Asian oil buyers to reduce exposure to disruptions in one of the world's most strategically important oil shipping routes. The Strait of Hormuz has been a hotbed of tension since the US-Iran conflict began in February, with tankers being targeted and security risks heightened.
Shipping data shows that Aramco has used tankers with their tracking systems switched off to transport crude through the Strait of Hormuz. However, this latest move suggests that Saudi Arabia is taking steps to diversify its shipping routes and reduce reliance on a single waterway.
