Saudi-Led Coalition Proposal Sparks Oil Price Decline Amid Ongoing Tensions
Oil prices declined on Thursday as investors weighed a proposed Saudi Arabia-led maritime coalition aimed at enhancing defense cooperation around the Red Sea.
The drop reversed earlier gains that followed fresh strikes between Washington and Tehran on each other's military targets, with Brent crude futures falling by $1.26, or 1.39%, to $89.48 per barrel.
Saudi Arabia is seeking to form a coalition with other nations to boost defense cooperation in the Bab El-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden, as Iran-aligned Houthi militants in Yemen declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia last week.
Talks between Iran and Oman regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz continue, but John Kilduff, a partner at Again Capital, noted that there is a sense of a large amount of supply waiting to enter the market once the conflict is resolved.
