Saudi Oil Pipeline Attacked Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict
Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline has been hit with multiple attacks, disrupting the country's oil supply and putting regional shipping routes at risk. The pipeline is a critical alternative route for moving oil around the Strait of Hormuz.
The attack threatens not just oil supplies but also food, grain, packaged goods, and cargo shipments between the Gulf, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Bab al-Mandab and Red Sea are crucial routes for these imports.
According to Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling (Ret.), Iran and the Houthis appear to have the initiative in the conflict. He notes that the U.S. is increasingly responding rather than setting the terms of the conflict, which could lead to entanglement with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, and NATO.
The situation has also brought back concerns about Somali pirates becoming active again, posing another threat to shippers once they navigate through the region's increasingly hazardous choke points.
